FIRE EVACUATION PROCEDURE

Draft an internal company fire evacuation procedure (standard) to regulate the procedure to be followed should a fire emergency occur in the workplace.

In the event of a fire emergency, everyone should evacuate the building immediately using the following procedure:

1. Activate the nearest fire alarm (if installed) or blow the whistle loud enough to alert everyone of the fire.

2. Remove all the staff, client ( including children if applicable)(and the attendance registers) from the building immediately.

a. Do not waste time collecting personal property.
b. Feel doors to see if they are hot before opening them.
c. If smoke is present, crawl low where the air is fresher and cooler.
d. No one should re-enter the building after the evacuation without fire department approval.

3. Contain the fire by closing the doors behind you as you evacuate.

4. Notify the neighbours of the fire by using your voice and/or knocking on their doors.

5. Evacuate the building using the primary escape route as shown on the Evacuation Floor Plan. If primary escape route is unsafe, use secondary escape route.

6. Once safely outside, call the Fire Department, using a cell phone or from a neighbours phone.

a. Provide the dispatcher with your name.
b. Address of the emergency
c. A phone number where you can be reached.
d. And description of the emergency (e.g. fire in the kitchen area, are there any people still inside the building, etc.)
e. Give as much information as possible, be prepared to answer questions, and do not hang up until told to do so by dispatcher.
7. Meet at the demarcated assembly area:

Keep a safe distance from the fire and avoid interfering with fire department operations.

Count and mark off all the clients / children and staff in the attendance register.

Tell the firemen if someone is missing and where they are most likely to be. Fight the fire ONLY if:

• The Fire Department has been notified.

• The fire is small and is not spreading to other areas.

• Escaping the area is possible by backing up to the nearest exit.

• The fire extinguisher is in working condition and personnel are trained to use it.
