Performance Evaluation

This tool assesses employee performance based on position-specific criteria. It is aligned with South African labour law, focusing on capacity and the need for counseling/improvement plans if standards are not met.

How This Evaluation Works (SA Labour Law Context)

Under South African labour law, poor performance is handled as incapacity rather than misconduct. Employers must give employees fair opportunities (counseling, training, time) to meet reasonable standards. Only if repeated attempts to improve fail, can more serious steps (like dismissal) be considered, following a fair procedure.

This tool uses a 0-5 rating scale for each question:

  • 0 = Total non-compliance
  • 5 = Full compliance or mastery
Scores are summed, divided by the maximum possible, and converted to a percentage. Each industry has a minimum threshold and a “desired” standard – the tool highlights if the employee’s score is below or above these thresholds.

If results are below the minimum or show a downward trend from a previous evaluation, an employer should consider more intensive improvement processes under SA labour law.
